Cpl. Rigoberto Felix, a member of the Special Response Team on Marine Crops Logistics Base Barstow, Calif., found a desert tortoise crossing the road near the base's rifle range, May 13. Felix contacted Stephanie White, natural resources specialist on the base who responded and documented the location, size, height, weight, and special markings for later identification. Given their camoflauged appearance, many mistake the tortoise for a rock in the desert terrain. The tortoise is nicknamed Rigoberta, after Felix. No training exercises were actually interupted during this sighting.
