Agnes Schaefer, Assistant Secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve, arrived by helicopter to meet with Col. Russell Savatt, base commanding officer, and Sgt. Major Miller Daceus, base sergeant major, regarding Army and Marine Corps cooperative efforts and railway operations, on the Yermo Annex aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, California, November 5. The Army saves millions of dollars each year by transporting equipment by rail, through MCLB Barstow, then convoying to Fort Irwin National Training Center for training rotations. They then reverse the process when returning soldiers and equipment to their home units.
