Assmeblyman Jay Olbernolte, of California's 33rd Assembly District, meets with members of Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow command group, including Col. Sekou Karega, commanding officer, during his visit to the installation Dec. 14. This was his first tour of the base and the purpose of the visit was to get insight on the overall mission of the base, how it supports the warfighter, the Department of Defense and the local community.

Smith was recognized as the oldest Marine present. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1939 and was honorably discharged in 1948.

Mehrer, adjutant clerk for MLCB Barstow, enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2012. Smith enlisted in 1939 and stayed until 1948, then enlisted in the Air Force and completed his military career in 1960.

Sgt Aron, of Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow's K-9 Corps, was thanked for his service during his retirement ceremony Aug. 20. Trained as a patrol explosive detector dog, Aron served at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton before his reassignment to MLCB Barstow in October 2014. He was adopted by Officer Jeffrey Minter of the base's Marine Corps Police Department.
