MCCS Barstow and Bob Hope USO welcomed children of all ages to the Back to School Brigade event at McTureous Hall aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, CA. on July 24. During the event, children were provided with backpacks, school supplies, snacks, and more. Additionally, parents were able to receive information about our library, Firefighters, fingerprinting for students, and speak with representatives from the schools throughout Barstow Unified School District.

Platoon Sergeant Jobie “Jo” Howell conducts Security Augmentation Force (SAF) training with Marines aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Ca. on July 19. SAF training aims to equip Marines with the necessary knowledge of police tactics and procedures in the event of activation. The training covers a range of activities such as range shooting, RAM vehicle searches, and OC contamination, among others.

1st Maintenance Battalion leadership dispatched Marines for hands-on training at Production Plant Barstow aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Ca. from July 8-18. This training took place over a two-week period with the Marines divided into two one-week segments for different groups. The participants included 3521s (Motor Transport Mechanics), 1341s (Engineer Equipment Mechanics), 1345s (Engineer Equipment Operators), 1141s (Electricians), 1391s (Fuels Specialists), and 1171s (Water Support Technicians). The Marines were involved in disassembling and reassembling vehicles, conducting PPB repairs to 5th Echelon, and performing minor repairs.

Captain William Kemp, 1st Force Storage Battalion Supply officer, organized the staff noncommisioned officer Field Meet for the Marines at the McCarver Hall Fitness Center aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base (MCLB) - Barstow, CA. May 31. Marines were placed into red and blue teams and competed against one another in several challenges including trivia, basketball, weights, pull-ups, tug-o-war, and more. Field meets are a customary tradition in every Battalion throughout the Marine Corps and have been in existence for at least a century, tracing back to World War I, and possibly even earlier. Marines possess inherent pride and athleticism, coupled with the mental fortitude required for various levels of competition. These events provide Marines with a chance to engage in friendly competition, showcasing their abilities, while also fostering camaraderie and strengthening esprit de corps.

Colonel Russell W. Savatt was born in Poway, CA. He attended Platoon Leaders Class Juniors and Seniors, graduating Officer Candidate School in 2000 as the Company E Honor Graduate. Upon graduation from the Virginia Military Institute in 2001, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. Following The Basic School, Lieutenant Savatt attended the Communications and Information Systems Officers Course in Quantico, VA, acquiring the PMOS of 0602. Upon completion of MOS training, Lieutenant Savatt was assigned to Marine Wing Communications Squadron 38. He served as the Multi-Channel Radio Platoon Commander and Executive Officer for Company A. During his tour, he deployed to Kuwait and Iraq in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM (OIF) I in 2003, OIF II in 2004, and OIF III in 2005. He was promoted to Captain at the end of his tour. In January 2006, Captain Savatt was assigned to 1st Marine Division where he served as the G-6 Operations Officer. Later that year, he deployed to the Middle East as an Individual Augment with Central Command J-6 to be a Network Operations Watch Officer in support of OIF and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM (OEF). In August 2006, Captain Savatt was assigned to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion. During this tour, Captain Savatt was the Battalion S-6, Commanding Officer for Headquarters & Service Company, and Battalion Executive Officer. While assigned to the Battalion, Captain Savatt deployed to Iraq in support of OIF in 2007 and again in 2008. In May 2009, Captain Savatt was assigned to 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command. Captain Savatt served as the Battalion S-6a and Battalion S-6. In 2011, he was promoted to Major and assigned as the Commanding Officer for Headquarters and Service Company, Special Operations Task Force 81 and Special Operations Task Force W

Lieutenant General Edward Banta, Deputy Commandant for Installations and Logistics, Major General Keith Reventlow, Marine Corps Logistics Command commanding general, and Colonel Gary Thompson, Marine Corps Logistics Command Chief of Staff, joined Colonel Gregory Pace, base commanding officer, and Colonel Kirk Spangenberg, Marine Depot Maintenance Command commanding officer, for a visit and tour of Yermo Annex aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, California on May 15. During the visit, Lt. Gen. Banta & Maj. Gen. Reventlow were briefed and guided to the Marine Corps Mounted Color Guard stables, MDMC Production Plant Barstow, and 1st Force Storage Battalion. They were also present for an award ceremony recognizing Ken and Melisa Nowicki for their outstanding volunteer service on base and in the community.

Following their departure from Ontario, CA., a group of 200 motorcyclists traveled through Joseph L. Boll, a route that runs parallel to the iconic Route 66, on their way to Washington D.C. where they will reach the Vietnam Wall by May 25.

These included water slides, inflatable bounce houses, carnival games with prizes, face painting and air brush art, live music performance, a demonstration on fire safety by Sparky the fire dog, a professional juggler, and much more!
