Brigadier General David A. Lesperance, commanding general, National Training Center, Fort Irwin, Calif., also spoke to the gathered veterans, family members and those paying respect at “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.” Originally recognized as Armistice Day to mark the end of World War I, the observance was changed to Veterans Day in the aftermath of the Korean War in 1954.
