Gen. James L. Day Conference Center aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, CA, October 3.

Throughout the month of October, MCCS Barstow Behavioral Health will offer a variety of classes and activities for all to engage in, commencing with Wear Purple Fridays.

The fire department conducted visits to the Child Development Center, School Aged Care program, Base Housing Community Center, and Marine Depot Maintenance Command Production Plant Barstow to educate about Fire Prevention Awareness Week aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Ca. from October 6-11. During each visit throughout the week, fire distributed goodie bags, had an animatronic fire engine featuring Sparky, along with the opportunity to see the inside of the fire engines. Additionally, there was interaction with firefighters and emergency services at the Coffee with a Firefighter event, which included blood pressure checks, informational conversations regarding smoke alarm safety, and provided time for families to ask questions about fire prevention at home.

The itinerary included a walking tour of the Marine Depot Maintenance Command Production Plant Barstow, an observation of Rail Operations, an opportunity to meet and ride horses at the Marine Corps Mounted Color Guard stables, and a first-hand look into the ongoing renovations at Barracks 175 on Nebo.

The Provost’s Marshalls Office provided a shotgun live-fire range training for all Active Duty personnel who are currently serving, or will be serving, in a Security Augmentation Force capacity at the Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow Ranges in Barstow, CA. on September 26. To facilitate the understanding of weapon systems, personnel from the SAF received instruction, guidance, and evaluations from the PMO Training Division on the M1014 Joint Service Combat Shotgun. The training program encompasses various aspects, including weapons safety, procedures for loading and unloading, target engagement techniques, reloading methods, firing positions, and the execution of live-fire qualifications.

Military and civilian personnel, along with their families, joined MCCS Barstow for the 2024 Fall Festival, themed as Oktoberfest, at the James L. Day Conference Center Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Ca. on September 18. The event featured a variety of activities for all age groups, such as mechanical bull riding, a petting zoo, craft stations, a caricaturist, a hot dog eating competition, carnival games, strength challenges, and numerous additional attractions. Sparky, the Fire Prevention Dog, also made a special appearance and joined in on the festivities with a bull ride.

1st Force Storage Battalion celebrated their Workforce Recognition & Information Day at the James L. Day Conference Center Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Ca. on September 12. During the event, employees engaged in games, received prizes, and enjoyed food together. This event was organized to boost employee morale and foster a positive workplace atmosphere, while simultaneously acknowledging employee accomplishments through a peer-to-peer voting system within the organization. This initiative offers significant team-building opportunities for the Battalion workforce and Marines.

The United States Veterans Support Group held the 3rd annual 9/11 Commemoration Ceremony at Mountain View Memorial Park & Cemetery in Barstow, Ca. on September 7. During the ceremony, Sergeant Major Miller Daceus, base Sergeant Major, Dr. Paul Courtney, Mayor of City of Barstow, and other distinguished individuals offered their reflections. The Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow Walking Color Guard presented the colors, while representatives from American Cruisers, Ms. Barstow, the Veterans Home of California - Barstow, and the Silver Valley High School California Cadet Corps laid wreaths to honor those who have fallen. Emergency personnel, including firefighters, police officers, and first responders, convened to commemorate and express their respects. The ceremony was concluded with a 21-gun salute, demonstrated by soldiers from Fort Irwin.

The Provost Marshal's Office conducted their quarterly live-fire range training aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Ca. on August 8 & 20. Each training session included a focused target practice component, as well as a low-light pistol range exercise featuring live-fire training conducted under conditions of minimal to no illumination. Furthermore, the Headquarters Company will conduct its Annual Rifle Qualification (ARQ) and Combat Pistol Program (CPP) range training to enhance ongoing awareness among Marines and civilian personnel.

Several city departments, vendors, K9’s, and Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow personnel were present at the event to provide information regarding community safety, fingerprinting, educational demonstrations, and much more. Police and children attending the event went head-to-head during a friendly water balloon fight.

Activities, crafts, snacks, and ice cream were at the event to recognize the top readers from the summer and celebrate a total of 117,869 minutes, with 97 registered readers.

Congratulations to Joann Rafferty, Abigail Gutierrez, Hailleigh Rafferty, and Kristi Baker for being the top readers!
